Felting Residency at The de Young Museum

December 9, 2014

I’m the artist in residency at the de Young Museum in San Francisco for the month of Dec . I will be there Wed to Sun Dec 3 to Jan 4 1 to 5. I am using my secret Streetcolor name.. Though not so secret as it once was.

It’s wonderful to me to see felt in a gallery setting. I wanted to push it as much as I could so I worked very large. It’s important to have a defined goal in artmaking to be productive and develop your largest ideas. To satisfy yourself with art.

In my efforts to be as confident and big as possible this summer I felted a house. This was up in Mendocino. It was only up for 4 days but it was worth it to make a felted house.

On the other end of making felt – we are doing a felt flower installation at the de Young Museum for my interactive art project.

This is the plan , first there is an installation of felt flowers on the wall that grows every day . Second I’m making felt flowers for the staff at the museum to wear -thus extending the space where art is seen in the museum. Third – people can come in to the Kimball Gallery and make their own felt flowers to wear and thus become part of the installation as they walk around the museum.

This is where you come in, you can come by the Kimball Gallery at the de Young Museum , make a felt flower and pin it to the wall installation or wear it around and be a piece of art.

That’s what is going on with felt at the moment. If you are interested in felting classes they will begin again in 2015. I will post them later but the dates will be Sat Jan 10 ” Start Felting ” and Sat Feb 14 ” Valentine Felting “.
