Felting Residency at The de Young Museum

December 9, 2014

photo (3)

I’m the artist in residency at the de Young Museum in San Francisco for the month of Dec . I will be there Wed to Sun Dec 3 to Jan 4 1 to 5. I am using my secret Streetcolor name.. Though not so secret as it once was.

It’s wonderful to me to see felt in a gallery setting. I wanted to push it as much as I could so I worked very large. It’s important to have a defined goal in artmaking to be productive and develop your largest ideas. To satisfy yourself with art.

In my efforts to be as confident and big as possible this summer I felted a house. This was up in Mendocino. It was only up for 4 days but it was worth it to make a felted house.

On the other end of making felt – we are doing a felt flower installation at the de Young Museum for my interactive art project.

photo (10)

This is the plan , first there is an installation of felt flowers on the wall that grows every day . Second I’m making felt flowers for the staff at the museum to wear -thus extending the space where art is seen in the museum. Third – people can come in to the Kimball Gallery and make their own felt flowers to wear and thus become part of the installation as they walk around the museum.

This is where you come in, you can come by the Kimball Gallery at the de Young Museum , make a felt flower and pin it to the wall installation or wear it around and be a piece of art.

That’s what is going on with felt at the moment. If you are interested in felting classes they will begin again in 2015. I will post them later but the dates will be Sat Jan 10 ” Start Felting ” and Sat Feb 14 ” Valentine Felting “.

Felting The Town Of Mendocino And A Felt Class Sat July 5

June 20, 2014

Making Felt mendocinoI’ve been putting up a very large felted installations in the town of Mendocino. Felt very conveniently turns out to be the most perfect material to make streetart, it can stand up to the weather like nothing else. Think felt yurts and you get the idea. { Should we be making felt yurts ? Maybe so ! } I can work very large and in a painterly way. I have been a visiting  artist at The Mendocino Art Center for this project and the fiber studio is large and light and best of al – it’s not mine ! Less responsibility , that’s what we want.

Black felt dryI’ve been building the large pieces out on the grid , drafting out the color and the adding in circles of felt. My idea is that the circle will be worked up into dimensional dots once the felt is very hard.

Black Bookstore feltThis is that same piece being sewn up outside the Mendocino Book store. It’s like a giant glass bead made of felt. Glass bead are an excellent source of imagery for feltmaking, lots of pattern and dots.

Big PillarsThese are the pillars outside of the store ” Out Of This World ” off  Main Street in Mendocino. For these pieces I had 2 people helping me lay out the work and rolling and felting. This felt like flying to me to be able to work this fast. I suggest you immediately get as assistant or 2 to help you make your felt. Try and find someone who will also bring you cinnamon buns.

Felting Class Sat July Panting with Felt and Fabric  10 to 5 100.00

After your done barbequing on July 4 consider a day of felting ! This class will be about nuno felting into silk, making nuno felt prefelts, over laying fabrics into each other , mixing colored wool and colored silk and how to use these methods in wraps and flat felt paintings. Lots of new material for experienced felters but great for beginners.

Felting The Entire Town of Mendocino and Summer Felting Classes

April 13, 2014

IMG_1248I’ve been meaning to felt the entire town of Mendocino for some time. I gave it a try last summer and wrapped felt around The Moose Cafe { the cafe is sadly gone forever } , Alegria Oceanveiw Inn and The Mendocino Art Center. Then I ran out of steam , or rather time and felt. The Mendocino Art Center was very interested in the idea of wrapping up the whole town so with their encouragement I will be going back this summer and feltbombing 20 businesses in an art installation called ” The Mendocino Crayon Box ” The plan is to wrap the pillars of all the businesses going down Main Street with handmade felt that I make and then dye into saturated colors. Thus turning the town into a crayon box !

It will be up from June 13 to Aug 16.

And you can participate !

IMG_1810Pillars in Mendocino looking naked. Waiting to be covered in felt .

I will be teaching a summer felting class in Mendocino called ” Great Big Felt ” on June 6, 7 and 8 which will be about making very large pieces of felt to be included in this unusual and experimental installation { As far as I know no one has done this before with felt] The class will cover felting big, felting on a grid, how to use color brilliantly and a little dyeing. It is at The Mendocino Art Center and there is more here on their website mendocinoartcenter.org.

Another way you can participate is to send me knitted crocheted or felted flowers to be tied on lattices around town I would need this by June 1. You can contact me about this at c.hoffberg@deepcolorstudio.com

Donate !

And yet another way is to contribute seed money ! I am funding this all myself and I am learning all about the modern ways of self funding. The Mendocino Art Center has set up a page where you can make a tax deductible donation of 25, 60. 120 or 500. That wonderful page is here.

Felting into Silk , Mendocino

October 9, 2013

CH-CarolCarol Field felting at The Mendocino Art Center Sept 20 2013.

A few weeks ago I loaded up my entire felting studio into my 20 year old Isuzu trooper and drove it up to The Mendocino Art Center to teach a Wool, Felt And Silk class. It was a lot of packing, thin plastic , ridged plastic, buckets, rollers, rainbow wool and silk, sponges… ” Whose silly idea was this ?” I kept muttering. And of course it was mine.

Mendocino Ca is sublimely beautiful , a weirdly New Englandy looking town on the bluffs of The Pacific ocean right where the  Big River flows into the sea.  The Good Life Cafe has great kale salad The felting studio was very nice although it has no felting equipment hence all the hauling. I had a class of 5 people, 2 of them over 80 , which provided new challenges.  There seems to be an unending interest in felting into silk fabric and making wraps , scarves and clothes. Felting is an amazing transformation of bits of colored dry wool into shimmering fabrics . It was funny , I would get into my teaching mind and forget I was in Mendocino. Then I would walk outside and see the uplifting sky and glowing green trees and the white oceany light and I would marvel.

Here are some more pictures of felting.

You can come and felt into fabric yourself this Sunday Oct 13 right here in my studio if you in the Bay Area.

It’s Fall – You Should Felt

August 29, 2013

IMG_0848

Fall in the Bay Area has a calming golden light, balmy weather and fresh sweet apples. It makes you want to make felt doesn’t it?

We had the ” Blue Felt ” class this weekend and I taught 3 things ;

1. If you are struggling with the color and imagery in your felt start adding blue, preferably a deep pure blue. Blue is the most restful and settling color, as you add more blue the piece will become more beautiful.

2. If all else fails you can save any felting disaster  by dyeing it in an indigo pot, everything looks good dyed indigo blue.

3. When you dip felt into indigo pot – first presoak it plain warm water. On your first dip go for 10 seconds , then 30 seconds to 1 minute for the next dips. Wait half an hour to an hour between dips. Let the piece dry completely. Wait at least a week before you wash out the indigo. The longer you wait the better  . Wash using lots of hot water and soap and finish with a bit of vinegar in the water.

I learned something new this weekend too. I went to Dharma to buy new Theoria Dioxide to reduce the indigo pot. The thiox we had been using was very old , maybe 10 years old and yellow. Well – this new fresh thiox was amazing , it reduced the pot searing yellow and the indigo really bit . This will be much better – who knew ?

So now is a good time to sign up for fall felting classes – on Sat Sept14 we will be doing “Felt Things to Wear ” which will cover yardage , wraps and simple vests with nuno felting. You will get something fine to wear for sure.

In Oct you can felt for one day or a whole weekend Sat Oct 12 is  “Color and Felting in Felt ” ” and Sunday is ” The Great Fundamentals of Felting “. I have had a request for needle felting in that class. You can sign up for 3 classes and save 30.00 bucks . Or 100 a piece. Classes need to be paid in advance and are non transferable. There is a 2 week cancellation policy.

I’ve been told there is a problem with the e-mail address c.hoffberg@deepcolorstudio.com. In emergency try
